AI vs. AI: The Cyber Arms Race Just Got Weird

You’ve seen it. We all have. Your friend asks an AI to write a Shakespearean sonnet about their cat, and it’s…surprisingly not terrible. You’ve seen the photorealistic images of historical figures taking selfies at the gym. Those Studio Ghibli transformations were super cute. It’s fun, it’s wild, and it’s a technological leap that’s reshaping our world.

But here on the emerging threats team, we maintain a healthy sense of caution. While the world is marveling at AI’s creative genius, we’re watching threat actors pull up a chair, crack their knuckles, and whisper, “Okay, my turn.”

Generative AI isn’t just a shiny new toy; it's the ultimate force multiplier for the bad guys. It’s like giving every B-list cybercriminal a Ph.D. in linguistics and a master’s degree in computer science. The game has changed, and we’re right in the middle of the weirdest digital arms race yet.

The Bad Guys’ New Playbook

For a long time, spotting a phishing attempt was all about trusting your gut. The email just felt…off. You’d see glaring typos, weirdly formal greetings on an urgent request, or phrasing so clunky it sounded like it was assembled from a dictionary by a confused robot. Those little imperfections were the reliable red flags, the digital tripwires we all learned to look for.

Well, those “reliable” tells have gone up in flames.

  1. Phishing Gets a Frightening Promotion: With generative AI, threat actors can now craft flawless, culturally-nuanced, and hyper-personalized phishing emails at a scale that was previously impossible. Imagine an AI scraping your LinkedIn profile and writing a perfectly casual email referencing your recent work anniversary and a shared connection, all to get you to click a malicious link. It’s no longer spear phishing; it’s AI-guided, laser-targeted harpooning.

  2. Malicious Code on Demand: You don’t need to be a coding guru anymore to create malware. Threat actors can now use AI models as their evil coding assistants. They can say, “Write me a Python script that steals browser cookies and avoids detection by common antivirus software,” and the AI will happily oblige. Even scarier is the rise of polymorphic malware, where AI can tweak the code for every single deployment, creating a unique signature that signature-based defenses simply can't catch. It's like a burglar who has a master key that changes shape for every door.

  3. The Deepfake Dilemma (a.k.a. "Vishing"): This is where it gets cinematic. We're already seeing threat actors use AI-powered voice synthesis to clone the voices of executives. The classic “CEO needs you to wire $50,000 immediately” scam is a lot more convincing when it's actually the CEO's voice on the phone. Video is next. The era of "trusting your own eyes and ears" is coming to a rapid, unsettling close.

Fighting Fire With Even Hotter Fire

Reading that probably has you wanting to unplug everything and move to a cabin in the woods. I get it. The bogwitch life calls to me, too. Unfortunately, the only thing I hate more than scams is bugs, so we’re going to have to temper that instinct.

The good news is, we get to play with the same cool toys. Our nerds are better than their nerds, and we’re using AI to build a whole new generation of defenses.

We’re deploying our own AI models to:

  • Analyze Behavior, Not Just Signatures: Our systems learn what “normal” looks like for your network. When an AI-generated attack starts behaving strangely–even in ways we've never seen before–our AI flags it as a threat.

  • Detect AI-Generated Text: We're training models to spot the subtle, mathematical fingerprints that generative AI leaves in its writing. It’s a cat-and-mouse game, but one we’re getting very good at.

  • Proactively Hunt for Threats: We use AI to simulate novel, AI-driven attack methods against our own defenses, finding the cracks before the bad guys can exploit them.

But technology alone isn’t a silver bullet. The most sophisticated defense system in the world can still be bypassed by one well-meaning employee who gets a very, very convincing call from their “boss.”

Fire Drills: The Security Version of Dungeons & Dragons

This brings us to the human element. How do you prepare your team for a threat that can perfectly mimic a trusted authority figure? You practice.

It's not enough to have an Incident Response plan gathering dust in a folder. You have to stress-test it against the threats of tomorrow, not yesterday.

This is where tabletop exercises come in. Think of them as a highly caffeinated D&D campaign for your security, IT, and leadership teams.

Building Muscle Memory

When a real incident happens, you don't want your team fumbling through a binder; you want them to react instinctively.

So, what does a next-gen, AI-themed tabletop scenario look like?

  • Scenario 1: The Deepfake Leadership. A newly-onboarded financial analyst receives a panicked, entirely convincing voice call from their branch chief (who is supposedly on a flight with no Wi-Fi) demanding an emergency wire transfer to a new vendor to close a secret M&A deal. Has this potential been covered in the very basics of security training? What does the team do? What's the verification process when you can't trust what you hear? Does your current policy even cover this?

  • Scenario 2: The AI Phishing Swarm. A generative AI targets your agency’s contracting and procurement division. It crafts and sends a swarm of unique, hyper-personalized spear-phishing emails, each one impersonating a known government contractor. The emails are flawless, using federal acquisition jargon and referencing real, publicly available contract numbers. The lure is a meticulously crafted, “urgent and time-sensitive update to a Request for Proposal,” and multiple contracting officers click the malicious link before the first security defense report is made to the help desk. How fast can your team identify that this isn't a single, isolated incident but a coordinated, wide-scale attack? Who is authorized to quarantine email systems or suspend access to critical procurement platforms? What are the agency’s mandatory reporting protocols? 

What We Do Best

So, then what is the secret sauce that turns a theoretical scenario into a muscle-building workout regime for your response team? It’s about making it less of a “checking-the-box” activity and more of a “break-a-sweat-in-a-safe-environment” simulation. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Train the People, Not Just the Tech. Your tools will generate alerts — that’s their job. A great tabletop exercise, however, tests the human systems. It’s less about whether malware is being tagged and more about “Did the analyst know who to call at 2 a.m. on a Saturday?” Focus on the moments where people have to make a call — literally and figuratively. This is where the real gaps are found:

    1. Who has the authority to take a whole department offline?

    2. When do you call Legal?

    3. What is the plan if your comms team finds out about the breach through social media first?

  2. Let it be Messy. Real-world incidents are never 100% clean. They’re chaotic: information is missing and key people are unavailable. A good scenario reflects that. In the “Deepfake Leadership” example, what if the branch chief really is on a flight to DC and completely unreachable for the next 4 hours? In the “AI Phishing Swarm,” what if it hits at 4 p.m. on the Friday before a holiday weekend? Introduce these complications to see how your team handles pressure and ambiguity, not just a technical checklist.

  3. Bring it Around Town. The exercise isn’t over when someone says “okay, stop!” The most crucial part is the debrief. The goal isn’t to assign blame, but to find breaking points with brutal honesty. Filing these gaps will be key. Ask the hard questions: “Where did we get lucky? Where did our process slow us down? Did anyone feel like they didn’t have the authority to make the right decision?” Answering these turns a theoretical fire drill into a real, actionable plan for improvement. It’s how a paper plan becomes a battle-tested capability.

The Path Forward

The rise of generative AI in cybercrime is undeniably a game-changer. It’s a double-edged sword that’s making the internet a wilder and more unpredictable place. But it's not a reason to despair.

It’s a reason to be prepared.
